Eating Animals

About a month ago I watched the movie Eating Animals. It was eye opening.

And a graphic depiction of our meat industry, animal treatment, and our environment.

I’ve always eaten meat. There were a few times when I was pregnant that I took a hiatus from meat eating due to my extreme day sickness.  But then I went right back to it. I’ve always been into fitness so eating meat was a staple item in my diet.

Fast forward to a month ago. I was horrified.

Horrified by the farms providing our nation with it’s meat.  It’s been 17 days since I’ve consumed meat and I’ll be honest I’ve never felt better.  I have been testing out milk alternatives, but haven’t been able to find one that tastes palatable.

Appalled by the Ag Gag laws. Shocked by factory farming, facilities where our nation gets the bulk of our meat from are downright cruel to the animals, the environment, and to the consumers. I have a heart for animals and watching the pain they endure it made me absolutely sick. It draws the question why does our nation have so many health concerns? Could it be that eating sick, and stressed animals is a cause for our health issues?

Now I do agree with eating meat from healthy animals that have lived a good life.  The animals raised in factory farming are not healthy.  They are sick, drugged, oh the list is endless.  I’d just say you have to see it to believe it.  I don’t, and can’t believe that all the farmers treat their animals this way.  Eating Animals did document the few good farmers as well.  We need more people like that raising our food.

Part of our homesteading journey was to raise our own meat.  I don’t think it’s going to be an easy experience, but I do think it’s important to raise our kids to choose better for their generation.

My husband plans to do a little hunting this year as well.  I know some people don’t agree with hunting, but I’d argue for a few reasons.

I found myself thinking about the movie for weeks after I watched it.  Sharing it with everyone I knew.

Wondering, how do we fix this?  How do we solve this?

I think a smaller scale resolution would be for us to band together and start raising our own food.  We see problems all throughout the year warning us of the latest recall on food products.  And it isn’t always the meat products we purchase.

I think it’s important that we educate ourselves, and our children to do good and be good in this world.

Just some random Saturday morning thoughts.

If you are interested I’d strongly encourage you to watch the movie.

DIY Hand Sanitizer Spray

When I first started using essential oils.  I was overwhelmed, a bit weirded out by those oil users so quick to push product in my face

But then I decided to try them.  It couldn’t hurt.

I’d like to say each day, but to be honest it’s probably a few times a week that I try to find an essential oil remedy to replace a less green product.

With it being germ season I really try to make sure little hands stay clean.  And prevent any unnecessary bug from entering our household.  But it’s hard, with kids it’s nearly impossible to keep the germs away.  But with compromised immune systems, and sensitive sensory systems I find that using more green products seem to help overall in our household.

There is reward in mixing up potions and rubs that actually do make a difference.

This quick DIY hand sanitizer spray only takes a few moments and can easily be refilled.

To be completely honest it cuts down a lot on cost.  And appeases my desire to live a more green lifestyle.

I not only use this spray on my hands, but in my car, on grocery carts, door knobs, you name it.  It’s exceptionally versatile for killing germs.

Can you earn income selling Young Living Essential Oils?

Yes!  For the person looking to avoid my ramble, ready to seize the day make easy side cash click here

If not, come on let’s really chat…

How I first found Essential Oils

I started using essential oils around the time my oldest pretty much stopped sleeping all together.  Thanks to my mother in law and mom for sharing their samples with me.

Desperate for any sort of sleep advice, I started to try essential oils.  I never was really consistent.  And they sat on my shelf for a long time.

Then my mom gifted me with the gift of becoming a distributor underneath her.   I was hesitant at first thinking I didn’t want to be part of a pozi scheme and spend extra money.

However this time was different.  I figured if I was going to really give Young Living Essential Oils a chance I needed to practice consistency and really try out the products.  I didn’t go crazy.  I waited each month to try something new.  I spent my time really looking into all that Young Living is, and have fallen in love with it.

I started to use essential oils daily and found myself loving every thing about them.  They are great for children, wonderful in dishes, great for the garden, helpful around the homestead.  Young Living isn’t just oils, it’s cleaning products, personal hygiene products, baby products, massage oils.  So many varieties of good, natural products to try.

I started to share with my girlfriends because I was truly enjoying this new green style of living.   I didn’t seek them out with the intention of them signing up underneath me, but they did, and it’s been so fun learning all things oils together.

Then they shared with a few friends.

It’s like a game of telephone with a paycheck.  You can opt in to purchase oils, but you don’t need to keep any in stock.

The thing about Young Living that I love is it sells itself.  It’s product driven.

Unlike most other MLM companies, Young Living products are consumable.  You can literally use essential oils in so many different ways in your life.

Part of our homesteading journey has been to live a more green life.

I use Young Living for cleaning products, supplements, for the kids, for the animals, I’ve even begun switching my makeup line over to Savvy Minerals by Young Living.

It’s such a versatile investment, Young Living Essential Oils can be used for so many purposes.  Not only can you make a little side cash.  But you can green up your lifestyle.

Do you actually make money?

After a few months I’m now consistently receiving a paycheck from Young Living.

It’s nice to have the extra cash, and always comes as bit of a surprise because I’m not actively selling anything.  I don’t have any extra oils in stock.  I only purchase what I use.  Like I said the product sells itself.

If you are interested in seeing actual $$$ you could potentially earn by selling Young Living take a look.

Is Breast Implant Illness Real?

I can’t say if it’s real or not.  But here’s my own personal story and I’m only at the beginning.

When I was 19 and knew all there is to know about life, I decided to get breast implants despite my parents urging me not to.  I was young, and knew everything so no matter what anyone said to me I felt like what I was doing was right.

Would I do it again?  Maybe, maybe not.  19 year old me seemed to think it was a great idea with minimal risks.

However fast forward almost 12 years and I’ve reached the point in my life where it’s vital for me to have my breast implants removed.

Each and every year my body takes on some new autoimmune issue.  The doctors advise me that the saline implants I have are the safest around, but as the years have gone on it feels like that’s just a misinformed response.

No one knows your body like you do.  At least that is how I am feeling.

It seems each day I read some new article about the dangers associated with breast implants.

A quick google search will advise you of some pretty concerning symptoms of breast implant illness.  Here’s just a small list of the odd illnesses that seem to plague me

  • Anxiety
  • Fatigue
  • Joint Pain
  • Brain Fog
  • Memory Loss
  • Vertigo
  • Temperature intolerance
  • Dry skin/Hair
  • Sinus Infections
  • Recurrent Illness
  • Ringing in Ears
  • Headaches
  • Depression
  • Sharp Pains in breasts
  • Food Intolerance
  • Irritable Bowel
  • Night Sweats
  • Swollen Lymphnodes
  • Intersistal Cystitis
  • Shingles at the young age of 28

The latest health concern to plague me is Costochondritis, in which the doctors advise me has nothing to do with my implants.  However I’m not sold.  You know how you just know something isn’t right.

It’s a bit concerning that these potential health risks are overlooked by surgeons.  But I am not a victim I made a choice, and will use that choice for good.  Sharing my story with others will maybe encourage someone else in my position to at least consider the side effects associated with breast implants.

For years I’ve considered having them removed, but life goes on and I set it on the back burner until my most recent trip to the ER involving excruciating chest pain in which I was diagnosed with Costochondritis and given a large quantity of anti inflammatory medication to help alleviate my discomfort.

My recent health scare was enough to give me the push to at least discuss with my doctor my latest concerns.  I was given a referral to a plastic surgeon.  And most definitely will be going forward with my decision to have these heavy obtrusive implants removed.

It is scary to consider going under the knife again to have them removed but I’m excited and nervous to get back to feeling like myself again.  I’m merely at the beginning of this new journey, and I’m not really sure exactly how quickly I can have them removed.  The healing process does frighten me, but I’m ready.

This post isn’t to shame someone with implants, I have a lot of friends who absolutely love their implants.  To each their own.  And I think we all choose to get plastic surgery for different reasons.  Mine was vanity, I wanted big boobs and by God I was going to get them.

If given the chance I’m not sure I would go back and forego my original surgery.  All of these choices we make in life are for a reason.  I don’t know if I would be the same person I am today had I not made that choice 12 years ago.

Life is funny like that.  Sometimes lessons are learned the hard way.

This has definitely been a lesson for me.  Learning about my body, my health, and finding myself.

I feel like I have a long road ahead of me, but am looking forward to the process and to healing.  I hope by sharing my own personal story as it unfolds it brings awareness to breast implants.  The good and the bad.

Anti Inflammation Diet & Simple Salmon Recipe using YL essential oils

I recently was diagnosed with an obnoxious ailment called costochondritis.  After a visit to the ER I was diagnosed with this particularly odd new to me condition.

If you haven’t heard of it I will brief you in a few bullet points some fun facts about it.

  • Feels exactly like a heart attack
  • Chest crushingly painful
  • Can be caused from emotional stress (most likely my problem)
  • Or too much physical exertion (also a runner up to the root of the problem)
  • It is in inflammation of the cartilage that connects a rib to the breastbone
  • The popping sensation I feel across my chest isn’t in fact a good thing.
  • It’s probably one of the most painful things I’ve experienced, and I’ve birthed two children

Anyways, I read what I could about it.  Chatted with my physician and was informed about the Mediterranean Diet.  Now I’m not a big fan of diets or fad diets.  I think most the time they do more harm then good however I am intrigued with this particular diet because it is supposed to reduce inflammation.  And changing my diet a bit is definitely worth it if I can rid myself of the feeling of a heart attack.

I’ve been eating a lot of fish.  And surprisingly I’m not sick of it yet.

I thought I’d share my hubbies creation using Essential Oils to cook seriously the best Salmon I’ve ever tasted.  Before this recipe I would dry heave at the sight of Salmon.

If you are in the market for some Basil Vitality Oil you can purchase some here.

Or you can always opt to use fresh Basil of course.

Basil & Lemon Salmon Filet

2 cloves of garlic

12 Tbsp Light Virgin Olive Oil

2 drops Basil Vitality Oil (mixed with 2 tsps water)

2 tsp salt

2 tsp black pepper

2 Tbsp lemon juice (or you can substitute with 2 drops Lemon Vitality Oil mixed with 2 tsp water)

16 oz Salmon Filet

  1.  Mix Garlic, Oil, Basil, Salt, Pepper, and Lemon together in a bowl.
  2. Place salmon in light greased baking dish.
  3. Smother, and I mean smother Salmon with garlic and basil mixture.
  4. Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
  5. Cover the salmon in the glass pan with foil and cook for 35-45 minutes.

It’s a super simple recipe.  Nothing to crazy, but it is unbelievably good.  We’ve also substituted the olive oil for coconut oil and it’s been just as tasty.

Have you had luck with chronic inflammation and dietary changes?

I know with my bladder disease I find that diet plays a very large role in my health and how I feel.

Hope you enjoy the recipe!

Danielle

Adding Mini Cows to our Homestead

While I’ve been away taking a break from life.

I’ve acquired two of the sweetest mini cows.

IMG-6508.JPG

Ferdinand & Clarabelle.

They arrived home on November 8th.  I used an Essential Oil concoction with Lavender Essential Oil to make their ride a little less overwhelming.  They were after all both being removed from their Mama’s for the first time.  I will say they were pretty calm and relaxed considering.

To be honest for the months leading up to their arrival there was a phase where I begged and pleaded with my husband to reconsider the arrival of these mini cows.

Fast forward almost a month later and I couldn’t be more in love.  In a few years when they breed we will be able to get our own fresh daily milk.  I am excited at the idea of providing ourselves with a little more sustainability.

After a lot of research we decided on the Mini Belted Galloway  breed known for their hardiness since we happen to live in the arctic some days.  They are feed efficient, and naturally polled.  For the inexperienced that just means in simple terms the bull does not have horns naturally.

I’ll be honest the bull is in fact the sweetest.  He’s like an enormous dog with a hoarse raspy moooooo that loves apples and carrots.

Both greet me each day with such enthusiasm and the sweetest cow faces.

Clarabelle is a little more reserved, but being an introvert myself I don’t fault her one bit.  In time she will come around.

Part of our homesteading journey was to get animals that would give back to us in some way.  Provide us with a service.  For now they eat hay (and not that much I might add) and they help eat the green waste around our homestead.

I love that they aren’t full size.  It makes handling them, feeding them, and space requirements much easier to handle.  Considering I barely know a thing about cow ownership it’s going pretty flawless.  Even with a mild escape a few weeks back.

I would most definitely recommend adding mini cows to your homestead if you are considering it.

There is something so sweet and gentle about a mini cow.
